I took teenage sons to the Great Estate and by over-hearing the chatter from the awning next to my van, have detailed insight to their take on the Great Estate. The long queues were testament to the popularity and, once inside, it was truly a zone for those who wanted to, ahem, make new acquaintances. For the older teens, like rampant moths to a hot flame of desire, the silent disco was the draw. Wandering royal cavalry mounted on snails, magicians, stilt walkers, dance shows, a skate half pipe with sofas and DJs – there were endless activities to keep the little ones enthralled, not to mention a funfair an extensive bouncy castle corner. The comedy was gloriously risqué yet, as the Welsh comedian exclaimed, he wouldn’t normally tell such jokes in front of kids – but, then again, they weren’t his kids.Ī young DJ gets a helping hand (Image: Matthew Hawkey)įor the families and kids, there was no end of entertainment. From Eminem to Will Smith with a bit of Black Eye Peas (well, mainly the chorus to Where Is The Love?) – the house was brought down by those who stepped up. There was no end of bedroom MCs ready to rule with the mic to the backing tracks.

If it was mirth you were seeking then the Hip Hop Karaoke followed by the comedy hour was just the tonic. Although, it must be said, the newly added Korev bar added a bit of Ibiza Sun Terrace to Redruth with a cool cordoned-off area with surfboard swings, podiums and anthemic DJs. Perhaps keeping the ravers in one place might lessen the constant walking from one venue to another for those chasing the drop of the bass. The absence of a dedicated dance tent was duly noted and although turntablist legends like DJ Yoda, Krafty Kuts, Danae B and Chris Tofu led the repetitive beats – this was all scattered over different stages. Another Friday highlight was the rather early programmed Break Beat Bandits who broke the sunny slumber with a percussion-led version of Insomnia that raised more than a dust cloud from the crowds.

Baka Beyond, with their world music fusion, set the tone for the weekend to a full tent of brightly-coloured hip swingers. There was also a distinctly off-beat secret venue curated by Great Estate director Ian Whittaker, the location of which was only revealed to those who ventured into a red phone box.

The quirkiness of the random Victorian / steampunk displays and installations all added to an otherworldly atmosphere. There were lots of fringe events in which to indulge from laughing yoga to belly dance workshops. The first day of a joyous long weekend finished with Mad Dog Mcrea – whose ferocious and infectious Irish jig has made them a firm festival favourite.įriday was darn hot and enticed many to a day leisurely ambling among the stately grounds of Scorrier House.

There was even a new track, Professional – their first, they claim, since 2017. Hedluv and Passman, whose Casio Cornish rap needs no introduction, were in their element with a receptive crowd at their best. This year, perhaps due to the Jubilee bank holiday, the Great Estate kicked off on Thursday with just the Madam Wong’s House of Wrong big top fronting the bill.

However, a 2am Saturday morning torrential downpour blew over and did nothing to dampen the spirits at the ever-evolving Great Estate festival. “Well, we were certainly lucky with the weather” was a common refrain as two days of sun-soaked euphoria threatened to be a sunk by a yellow weather warning and thunderstorms.
